In The Room of a Thousand Miles by Billy Collins is a poem about writing what one sees. When writing about something out the window, it is easy to use the technique show, not tell. This is a very good techinique to use when writing. It helps the writer become familier with descriptive words that might ordinarly not be used. It also brings the reader in to what one is writing, draws the reader into another world entirly created by the writer. In this poem, Collins is writing about a man who is writing about what he sees out his window. The man seems misunderstood because his wife wants him to write about far away places, yet he stays true to himself and writes about what is outside his window. He sees simple things, but in his minds eye, does he see art? The simlpe things can have such beauty, yet one passes by the common things since there are seen everyday and taken for grated. For exapmle, Collins has the man notice " a pink tree in bloom, a neighbor walking his dog" and one that most people usually hear but never notice anymore " that bird I hear outside, the one that sings, pauses, then sings again." Collins makes us see beauty within a simple thing, gets us to wonder what we can find if we look hard enough. Writing what one sees is often considerd boring unless in a new world, a different country, but if one looks deep enough, one may find the greatest beauty of all, without even leaving ones house.
